What is mastitis?
Mastitis is an inflammatory condition of the breast, which may or may not be associated with an infection. Commonly mastitis occurs when the supply of milk exceeds the demand and becomes backed up in the breast. It may create breast milk leakage outside of the duct into the surrounding tissue, triggering an inflammatory response. This inflammation is a healing reaction from your body tissue and can result in pain, redness, swelling and difficulty feeding. Flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches and fatigue are not uncommon and are part of the recovery process. In some cases, treatment with antibiotics may be required. Immediate treatment is important. Our physiotherapists can assist you in deciding on the most appropriate treatment for your concerns.
