Equipment - Alarm Instructions (Malem)

The bedwetting alarm is used to treat wetting at night that is caused by inability to wake and go to the toilet.
It also has the effect of increasing the bladder's ability to hold urine at night.
To achieve dryness it may need to be used consistently for 2-3 months.
Seeing your physiotherapist regularly during that time will help to achieve the best outcome for your child.
When you child has been dry for 14 nights s/he is considered cured and your physiotherapist might give an "overlearning" task to do before discontinuing the alarm.

HOW TO SET UP THE PERSONAL ALARM

There are two styles of malem alarms both can be clipped onto clothing.
In both cases place the sensor between 2 pairs of undies or on the outside of undies and a pull-up over the top.
Place it where it will immediately get wet.
The alarm box is pinned to clothing on the shoulder.
The lead to the sensor runs inside the clothing.
For both alarms test to check and rehearse before going to bed.

EASY-CLIP and sensor all in one Alligator clip - sensor 10cm beyond the clip
Alligator clip is attached to elastic on underpants

THE FIRST NIGHT

Using the alarm is a family commitment
The first night your child may need you to sleep in the same room with them.
You will need to be able to hear and wake to the alarm throughout the course of treatment
It is important your child has adequate opportunity to experience how the alarm works prior to using it overnight, this may involve role play on a favourite toy.

WHEN THE ALARM TRIGGERS

The first step is learning to wake when the alarm triggers.
Upon waking up to the alarm, try to stop any more urine from being released from the bladder.
Initially your child may need help to wake fully
He/she should turn the alarm off, and then go to the toilet to wee.
Stop the sound or vibration by pressing the small reset button.
Remove the Standard sensor and wipe dry with a cloth.
Remove the Easy-Clip sensor and keep the lever up.
Do NOT unplug the cable from the body of the alarm.
Replace the sensor into dry pair of undies as before and go back to sleep.
Always test alarm by wetting sensor or closing the Easy-ClipTM lever before use.
Parental help in waking up children when the alarm sounds is reassuring and helpful especially during the first few nights.
If the alarm sounds a second time in the night, leave it off for the rest of the night.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Becoming dry is a process.
The first step is learning to wake when the alarm triggers.
Initially your child may need help to wake fully.
Parental help in waking up children when the alarm sounds is reassuring and helpful especially during the first few nights.
If the alarm triggers twice in one night, leave it off for the rest of the night.
It is important to record the Children- Night time Diary accurately.
This helps us to evaluate progress and solve any problems.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • sweaty: put an extra layer of undies
  • won't turn off: sensor getting flooded, remove lead, press button, thoroughly dry and then replace
  • fear: acknowledge this is a confronting process, continue to familiarise your child with the alarm during waking hours
  • not waking: a wet flannel on your childs stomach will help - it is important to gain consent from your child each night to do this
