  • men with better developed pelvic floor muscles before surgery are dry sooner (2007)
  • men who are individually taught pelvic floor exercises by a continence physiotherapist will be dry sooner (2005)

We want you to

  • Book and attend an appointment as early as possible before your planned Prostate surgery.
  • Learn and practice correct pelvic floor exercises before surgery.
  • Do only gentle pelvic floor exercise program after your catheter is removed after surgery.
  • Attend again as soon as possible to ensure your technique is correct.
  • Continually challenge yourself to brace your pelvic floor muscles in situations that make you leak.

Physiotherapy to increase control of bladder, bowel

  • bladder control issues (urgency and incontinence) even without prostate cancer.
  • faecal urgency and incontinence, constipation, difficult defaecation.

Physiotherapy to improve erectile control

There is emerging evidence that pelvic floor exercises can increase erectile function when used in conjunction with lifestyle changes such as cessation of smoking, alcohol, healthy diet, weight reduction, general fitness and saddle pressure. The improvements in erectile function are better than the lifestyle changes on their own. (Grace Dorey 2005)
